Also coming up for Shane is the cinema release of two Australian Films – CACTUS and NEWCASTLE.
CACTUS is the debut feature film from writer and director Jasmine Yuen-Carrucan and Executive Produced by Bryan Brown. John (Travis McMahon) kidnaps a young man one night in Sydney and bundles him into his car for a long drive into the outback. The prisoner, Eli (David Lyons), is frightened but confused why he is being kidnapped – and by whom. The long drive pits the men against each other, but it also forces them into an uneasy bond as John reluctantly reveals his compelling motivation for taking on this job. A single unintended event leads to the unraveling of John’s delivery plan and thrusts the two men into a vortex of tragic consequences.
The film opens in Australia on May 1.
NEWCASTLE will debut at Robert De Niro’s annual festival Tribeca in New York From April 25 and is due for release in Australia later this year.
NEWCASTLE is a coming-of-age/family drama/surfing movie set in Newcastle Australia. 17-year old Jesse lives in the shadow of his older brother Victor’s failure to become surfing’s Next Big Thing. Even when he’s in his natural habitat of magnificent surf breaks, his blue collar future is brought home by the coal barges that constantly line his horizon. Jesse has the natural skills to surf his way out of this reality and onto the international circuit but can he overcome his equally natural ability to sabotage himself? A momentous weekend away with his mates that includes first love and tragedy leads him to discover what’s really important, and also to the performance of a lifetime. Directed by Dan Castle.
Network Ten and Thunderbox Television are pleased to announce that Australia’s favourite porta-loo plumber and part-time philosopher, Kenny Smyth, will be housing his plunger, trademark overalls and gloves in the TEN toilets when his new docu-comedy airs in 2008.
Following on from the success of Kenny, The Jacobson Brothers are now creating an international travel show with a difference, KENNY’S TOILET TOUR (working title) an eight episode, half hour television series which follows Kenny on a sightseeing tour you won’t find in any Lonely Planet Guide.
From the World’s fastest Portaloo in Indianapolis, Egypt’s City of the Dead, The World Toilet Summit and Expo in India, the latest zero-gravity super loos in space to the eco friendly green toilets in the ancient Chinese capital Xi’an, Kenny scours the globe for bizarre, intriguing and often downright ridiculous examples of toilet technology and the people connected
to them.
The KENNY crew will depart Australia in late October to commence filming in a variety of destinations around the world including Russia, Japan, Sweden, China, Egypt, UK, and USA.
The announcement of KENNY’S TOILET TOUR (working title) complements the Australian TV premiere of KENNY and The Making of Kenny airing on TEN on Wednesday, September 19 at 8.30pm and the opening of the film in the UK on September 28.
KENNY’S TOILET TOUR (working title) is a uniquely engaging, informative and entertaining celebration of humanity – told with honesty, respect and heart – via one of the most basic but least talked about aspects of human life – “taking care of business”.
Over the last month, Shane has been busy promoting the Kenny: Takin’ Care of Business book; which features Kenny-isms and jokes from the film and is now available at any good book retailer, published by Random House.
On Monday 13th August, Shane was awarded the Australian Star of the Year Award at the Australian International Movie Convention.
Tune in to Enough Rope with Andrew Denton to see a very special interview with Shane on Monday 20th August at 9.45pm on ABC and don’t forget Spicks N Specks on Wednesday 29th August, 8.30pm on the ABC.
With the films upcoming release in the UK, Shane will be heading overseas from August to October to promote Kenny. The UK release date is September 28th.
Upon his return Shane will begin filming the Kenny TV Series, stay tuned for more information.
